Cameron Crowe, what a trippy ass movie.
This week I chose Vanilla Sky. I almost went with V for Vendetta but I wanted to revisit Vanilla Sky because I remember the ending was so confusing, unique, and interesting at the time I saw it. I had never seen a twist like that before so I really wanted to have a smart moment and impress my friends I went with to explain it to them. I remember we were all confused for the most part. A twist like this would possibly be predictable with today’s audience because in some variation it has been done many times by now. Kudos to Crowe for breaking out this adapted screenplay when he did. At least for me it was new. Sadly, that was the only thing I remembered when popping in my old DVD copy of Vanilla Sky to watch it again. It was like watching the movie again for the first time. The only thing was is that I know how it ends. I’ll explain what I thought of the movie this time around after the jump.
“Penelope Cruz is mesmerizing, Cameron Diaz scared me, I really miss Jason Lee, and Tom Cruise is a Handsome MotherF@%#%^ in this movie.”
What a trippy, twisted, crazy movie. It really was like watching the movie over again. I barely remembered any of these scenes. Unfortunately, this is one of those movies where if you know the ending or big reveal, it kind of takes some of the fun out of it. Some movies are worth re-watching again because you know the ending cause you can spot certain hints and tells that lead to the climatic ending. This one however didn’t get me too excited as I wanted it to because I knew how it was going to end. I don’t know if that is a compliment to the director and writer but he brought on the mystery so hard that when you know what is coming it just takes the fun out of it.
What did impress me and keep me glued to my screen was the cast and the acting they performed. A friend of mine asked me what I thought of the movie this time around and my immediate response was, “Penelope Cruz is mesmerizing, Cameron Diaz scared me, I really miss Jason Lee, and Tom Cruise is a Handsome MotherF@%#%^ in this movie.” The acting in this movie blew me away. That is what makes this movie’s reply value great.
So Vanilla Sky is still a great movie. I would like to talk more about the movie in depth but just in case any of you readers haven’t seen it, I suggest you just watch it. Don’t watch a trailer, don’t read the synopsis. Just sit down and watch it and hopefully you will be blown away like I was.
