Movie Review: Suicide Squad

A group of great characters was no match for a story that felt a little rushed to cram a lot of intros into one movie. DC, you are onto something but not quite there yet.

First, let me just say thank you thank you THANK YOU for Margot Robbie and David Ayer for bringing Harley Quinn to the big screen in live action. I have been waiting for an adaptation to that character for a long time and it paid off. The moment she was announced to play the devoted lover of the clown prince of crime I knew she would kill it. Robbie really did Harley justice. Bravo!

Now onto the movie

I don’t agree with most critics regarding the movie. I thought this movie was entertaining and a joy to watch. When it comes to Marvel, DC, or even Disney. I am driven by the villains of the story. So you can imagine my excitement when I see a movie that has a group of villains all in one movie. The movie had a lot of flashbacks to represent their origins of the squad. In the lead were Deadshot, Harley, and Flagg.  They had a lot of character development than the rest. Killer Croc and Capt. Boomerang weren’t utilized well. However, El Diablo, played by Jay Hernandez, is one of my favorites in the movie. His character really stood out to me.

The story and its villain felt a bit rushed and condensed to me. The movie tried to cram a lot into a 2 hr. movie. I understand there is a lot of material to cover since none of these characters weren’t given their own movie. So If you are not a fan of flashbacks to take a big part of the movie, this may disappoint you. The movie had some great lines, nice action and effects, Jared Leto’s Joker was effective and appropriately on the sidelines. He was able to still make an impact.

The movie has great potential. There was nothing wrong with this movie except for the story. I hope to see another one of these with new members of the Suicide Squad put in. I look forward to the solo movies to progress the DCEU. To me I saw this as a prologue movie. A look into the potential of this group if they were given more mission. We get a great peak into how ruthless Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) is and a night in the lives of the squad and how much fun they can be when they are all together. I kind of wanted a darker movie of the squad. Not because its DC but because I know that these guys are the worst of the worst. They were humanized just a little bit more than I wanted.

+1 Not boring at all. Nice action and funny moments.
+1 Great acting from Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Everyone played their part.
+0 Not an impressive story. Too much crammed into one movie.
+1 Recommend it as its a fun movie to watch
+1/2 No reason to watch this movie again unless you want to see Harley Quinn again.

3 1/2 out of 5 on the entertainment scale
